One Strong Belief

It is easy in the world to live after the world’s opinion; it is easy in solitude to live after our own; but the great man is he who in the midst of the crowd keeps with perfect sweetness the independence of solitude.
- Ralph Waldo Emerson, Self-Reliance

Day 3 Assignment by Buster BensonPublish Post

The world is powered by passionate people, powerful ideas, and fearless action. What’s one strong belief you possess that isn’t shared by your closest friends or family? What inspires this belief, and what have you done to actively live it? Buster Benson

One Strong Belief

I believe in the power of faith. I believe that we live under a Covenant of Divine Protection. This protection extends itself over every area of our lives: spiritual and physical; it covers our health, our finances, our circumstances, our household, or children, our pets.

I do not believe that we have to ask God or beg God to give us things or do things for us. In fact, on the contrary, I believe that doing so is pointless.

God has already done everything he is going to do for us.

That may sound pessimistic, but really it isn't. God has already provided everything for us. We have the raw materials we need to create whatever we need, and we have his promises to us given in his Word. God's Word is not a book of laws that we have to follow, but rather a bag of seed that we can sow into our lives and reap the harvest.

Be not deceived; God is not mocked: for whatsoever a man soweth, that shall he also reap.
~Galations 6:7

Again, this isn't a threat, this is a promise. We can sow weeds, and we will get weeds. We can sow nothing, and weeds will spring up on their own. Or, we can sow the seeds of what we want to experience in our lives, and that is what we will get.

We spend far too much time asking God for things. Imagine that one of your children asks you for $10 and you set it on his dresser in plain view. Instead of picking up the $10 and sing it, he comes back and asks for $10. This happens over and over again every day, sometimes several times a day. Would that get to be a bit annoying?

Thankfully, we have a patient and merciful Father who doesn't get worn out by our repeated requests for what he has already given us. But, that doesn't change the fact that asking over and over again isn't going to change our situation: we have to pick up the $10 bill!

God has already provided everything for us -- our salvation is complete -- it's up to us to receive this gift.

Now don't get me started down the path of God bringing illness or problems into our lives to teach us something... (Paul and his thorn in the flesh for example, or Job and his trials). This post will be far too short to deal with kicking over those sacred cows.

Let me just say this: If you are wondering whether or not God sent something into your life, read John 10:10. That will clarify things. Does it give you life more abundantly? If not, it isn't from God.

The faith message is a hard one for many people to live by. It means taking personal responsibility for the mistakes and problems in our lives. It's a lot easier to just blame God and say that his ways are mysterious.
